The Peace Sign

The Peace Sign was really popular in the 90’s in fashion, art and politics. Swampy was cool for stopping roadworks and he had dreadlocks and lived in a tree. Tie-dyed clothing was also cool. Waistcoats and Take That went hand in hand with having a peace sign on your T-shirt, around your neck or on a poster in your bedroom. Being Green was reserved for the new hippy generation and the Rainbow Warrior was getting into trouble. Teenagers drew peace signs on their exercise books and on their faces without really knowing why.

The peace symbol was originally used in the 1960’s and 1970’s as the badge for the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament but came to represent a counter-culture of environmental concerns as well.
