Pooters – UK Primary Schools – 1960s to Present Day

When I, and all my elder brothers were at primary school in various places in the UK, we learned the important skill of how to use a “pooter.”Pooter

In case you can’t remember, or never knew, a pooter is basically a plastic bowl with two straws coming out of the lid at the top. One of the straws had some gauze stuff over the end (this was the straw you sucked in) the other straw did not. You would place the uncovered, longer, straw next to a bug or insect of some kind, and suck, with your mouth, through the covered straw. This would suck the insect into the clear plastic bowl, where you could then torment the poor creature.

I cannot remember why we did this, and am not sure what it taught me, however I did learn to make sure I was sucking on the right straw…

Pooters are, I’m sure, a British schools tradition.
